What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
AEO helps businesses understand and improve their visibility in AI answers. Learn what to measure and where to start.
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of improving how accurately and often your business appears in relevant AI answers. For a local business, that usually means checking whether an assistant names you when someone asks for a provider, understanding the information attached to that answer, and fixing gaps in your public presence.
Consider a prospective customer asking, “Who can repair a leaking roof in Denver?” The answer might name several companies, explain what each offers, and link to sources. Your visibility includes whether your company appears, whether the description is correct, and whether the customer can follow a useful link.
AEO gives that work a name. It does not supply a universal ranking formula or a way to buy a guaranteed recommendation.
What you are trying to improve
A business mention, a citation and a website visit are different observations.
An answer can name your business while citing a directory. It can cite your article without recommending your services. A person can read a recommendation and leave without visiting any website. Count each event separately where you have the evidence to do so.
For a first check, record three things: whether the answer names your business, what it says about you, and which pages it cites. Those records help you find a missing service, an outdated address, or a competitor repeatedly appearing for a question you serve.
They do not establish how many people saw the answer or became customers. A visibility report measures the questions and responses included in that report. Leads and sales require their own tracking.
How AEO relates to SEO
Search engine optimization helps people discover your website through search. AEO extends the measurement to the answer a person receives: the businesses named, the description of each business, and the sources provided.
Much of the underlying work overlaps. Google's guidance for its AI search features emphasizes SEO fundamentals, useful original content and accurate business information. A page should explain what you do, where you operate, and how someone can contact you. Public profiles should describe the same business.
The added task is observing AI answers directly. A position in a search-results report cannot tell you whether a particular generated answer includes your name. The comparison of ChatGPT SEO and Google SEO explains which measurements to keep separate.
Where an answer's information comes from
Some answers use web search and retrieval. Others may draw on the model's existing knowledge, information supplied in the conversation, or a combination of sources. The question and the product's settings affect what you can observe.
When an answer includes citations, open them. A cited page might be your website, a business directory, a local article, or a comparison page. Check whether it says anything relevant about your business and whether that information is accurate.
A citation is evidence that a source was attached to that response. It does not reveal every input behind the answer or prove that one sentence on the page caused your inclusion. Copying a competitor's directory listings therefore cannot promise the same result.
Run a small, repeatable first check
Choose five questions that describe a customer need without naming your business. Include the city or service area when it affects the choice. A roofer might start with leak repair, flat-roof repair, storm damage, roof replacement, and an inspection before buying a house.
Keep the wording and location fixed. Use fresh conversations and note the service, date, settings, and whether a web-backed answer appeared. Save the response, the names mentioned, and the cited links. Keep an unsuccessful request separate from an answer that returned successfully without your name.
Compare services, then repeat under similar conditions. A single answer gives you a place to investigate; several comparable observations give you a better basis for deciding what to work on. The step-by-step visibility check includes a recording method.
You can also use AEO Monitor to generate customer questions from your website or business description. Its free beta offers up to five questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. Review the questions before interpreting the answers: a business needs to be measured against services it really provides.
Once you have that baseline, use the action plan for getting named in AI answers to choose a specific correction, record the change, and check the same questions again.
Questions
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization: work to improve how accurately and often a business appears in relevant answers from AI assistants and search products.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Accurate, accessible website content remains useful. AEO adds the task of checking the answers themselves, including named businesses and cited sources.
Can an AEO service guarantee a recommendation?
No. A service can measure a defined set of answers and help correct public information, but inclusion depends on the question, product, settings and response.
