Law-firm SEO keywords at $88 a click: what the number means
A dated keyword estimate puts law-firm SEO terms at $88–97 per click. Separate that ad cost from SEO fees before budgeting for AI visibility.
The AEO Monitor law-firm page cites a SpyFu US snapshot from September 2026 showing $88–97 per click for the terms “law firm seo companies” and “law firms seo.” These are keywords for buying SEO services. They describe a different purchase from someone searching for a lawyer after an accident.
The figure is a reported keyword estimate, not an invoice from a firm's campaign. Organic SEO does not charge by the click, and the snapshot does not establish what a legal client costs to acquire. It does give an agency buyer a useful reason to ask precisely what a visibility proposal measures and delivers.
Separate the costs before comparing them
Paid-search CPC is the price of an advertising click. An SEO retainer pays for work such as site improvements, content and reporting. Cost per qualified enquiry depends on what happens after a person arrives, including whether the enquiry fits the firm's practice. Cost per signed client depends on another set of outcomes after that.
An AI mention is a different measurement again. A firm can appear in an answer without receiving a visit, a call or a case. Treating the appearance as a client makes any return-on-investment calculation unreliable before it begins.
If an agency puts $88 next to a proposed monthly AEO fee, ask what connects those numbers. The cited keywords concern firms shopping for SEO providers. They are not a forecast of the revenue your firm will earn from ChatGPT recommendations.
Establish what the answers say today
Before evaluating a proposal, write a small set of questions that fit your practice and city. Ask the same questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI, then keep the answers and source links. Record missing results as well as returned answers.
Our Austin personal-injury sample illustrates why a baseline needs separate service results. On September 27, 2026, 27 returned answers named 57 firms. FVF Law Firm appeared eight times in ChatGPT and three times in Perplexity, with no appearances in the captured Google AI answers. An overall mention total would conceal that difference.
This is evidence about a particular test. It does not establish a firm's ordinary Google ranking or prove that clients have shifted their spending to AI. The baseline lets you inspect the current answers for the questions you chose.
Ask an agency to name the work
A useful proposal identifies which pages need attention and why. It might include correcting inconsistent practice information, improving a service page, reviewing an eligible directory profile, or making a site's content easier to access. Each task should have an owner, a deliverable and a date.
Ask the agency to show a cited page that prompted its recommendation. If the suggestion is “get listed,” ask whether the firm meets the listing criteria and whether a paid placement is involved. A paid profile and an independent editorial selection are different arrangements, and neither guarantees an AI mention.
For Google specifically, its guidance for generative AI search continues to emphasise SEO fundamentals and helpful content. It does not prescribe special AI schema. A proposal should explain the concrete improvement it buys rather than attach a new label to an unspecified monthly service.
Agree on what would count as progress
Keep visibility reporting and business reporting connected without treating them as interchangeable. A report can show that a firm appeared in more of the same test questions. Intake records can show what prospective clients said about how they found the firm. Neither measurement supplies the other automatically.
Ask for the prompt set, the conditions used, returned answers, failures and a log of edits. If the agency changes the questions halfway through the engagement, request a separate comparison using the original set. Otherwise, a more favourable score might reflect a different test.
Start with a scoped review and changes you can inspect. Keep measuring the channels already producing qualified enquiries. Increase a budget when the work and results support it, rather than because a keyword estimate sounds expensive.
The law-firm recipe offers a free beta check of up to five questions across three AI services. Bring that baseline, and the law-firm implementation guide, to the next proposal review.
Questions
Does law-firm SEO cost $88 per click?
Organic SEO is not billed per click. The $88–97 figure is a SpyFu estimate cited by AEO Monitor for ads on law-firm SEO-service keywords in the US in September 2026. It is not a universal price for acquiring a legal client.
Should a law firm move its Google Ads budget into AEO?
A keyword estimate does not justify that decision. Establish an AI visibility baseline, define the work and compare business outcomes before changing a channel that already produces qualified enquiries.
What should an AI visibility agency report contain?
The questions tested, dates and conditions, answers by service, named firms, source links and failures. Ask for a change log and separate evidence of enquiries or clients from evidence of AI mentions.
